Foam Replacement

When the fabric is fine but sitting no longer is

Foam

Foam dies invisibly. The cover still looks acceptable, but you sit lower every year and the front edge rolls. Replacing foam in cushions, seats or wrap restores height and support without the cost of a full recover.

We cut density to the job: softer for a lounge back, firmer for a dining seat, high-resilience where people sit all evening. The point is not more foam, it is the right foam in the original shape.

  • Cushion inserts

Repair first

We look at the frame, springs, foam and covering separately. If a joint is loose, new cloth will not save it. The honest sequence is inspect, repair, then recover — only if the piece is worth it.

Replace only if needed

Some modern frames are chipboard. Some hides are finished. We would rather say a piece is not worth covering than take a recover that fails in months.

What this actually includes

Explained, not just listed.

01

Density choice

Soft, medium or firm fill matched to how the piece is used.

02

Shape copied

New foam cut from the old piece, not a generic slab.

03

Cover refit

Existing covers reused where they still fit and zip cleanly.

04

Edge roll fix

Front edges built up so you do not slide off the seat.

How the job runs

From photos to a piece you can sit on.

A clear path from first pictures to workshop finish — so you always know what happens next.

  1. Describe the sit

Too low, too soft, sloping forward, or collapsed in one cushion only.

  2. Open the cover

We see the old foam grade and whether a recover is also needed.

  3. Cut and replace

New inserts fitted and wrap built back to the original profile.

  4. Sit test

Height and feel checked before the piece leaves the workshop.

Honest comparison

Advantages & disadvantages

What this service does well — and what to weigh up before you commit.

Advantages

  • Restores sit height and support without a full recover
  • Firmness can be chosen for how you actually use the seat
  • Often pairs well with webbing or spring checks
  • Visible improvement when old foam has collapsed

Disadvantages

  • If covering is already failing, foam alone looks unfinished
  • Exact density feel is personal — samples help
  • Wrapped or channelled cushions take more cutting time
  • Old foam dust and glue need careful workshop handling

This page is a good fit if…

  • Sofas that look acceptable but sit like a hammock
  • Dining chairs with pancake seats
  • One collapsed cushion in an otherwise even set
Quick answers

Questions people actually ask.

Yes. Tell us if you want hotel-firm or a softer lounge sit.
Sometimes as a wrap. Base support is usually a proper seating foam, not a mattress offcut.
No foam does. Better density lasts years longer than cheap replacement pads.
