Furniture Repair

Fix what is broken before you recover what is worn

Furniture repair

Repair is the unglamorous half of upholstery, and the half that makes recovering last. A loose arm, split rail, collapsed webbing or broken corner block will show through any new fabric within months. We inspect the piece as carpentry and seating, not just as covering.

From Hayes we repair what is practical to keep, then you can decide whether to recover or leave a still-serviceable cover in place.

Structure assessed before any new fabric goes on

Repair first

We look at the frame, springs, foam and covering separately. If a joint is loose, new cloth will not save it. The honest sequence is inspect, repair, then recover — only if the piece is worth it.

Replace only if needed

Some modern frames are chipboard. Some hides are finished. We would rather say a piece is not worth covering than take a recover that fails in months.

What this actually includes

Explained, not just listed.

01

Joint repair

Loose corners and arms re-set so the piece stops rocking.

02

Support reset

Webbing and support cloth replaced where the seat has dropped.

03

Break assessment

We say if a break is worth repairing, or if replacing the piece is kinder.

04

Then recover

Repair first, covering second — so new fabric is not hiding a weak frame.

How the job runs

From photos to a piece you can sit on.

A clear path from first pictures to workshop finish — so you always know what happens next.

  1. Show the damage

Photos of the break, the underside, and how the piece sits on the floor.

  2. Inspect properly

Covering often has to come back to see the joint. We will say when that is needed.

  3. Repair in workshop

Timber, fixings and support rebuilt on the bench.

  4. Decide the finish

Leave the old cover, or recover now that the structure is sound.

Advantages & disadvantages

What this service does well — and what to weigh up before you commit.

Advantages

  • Fixes the structure before money is spent on new cloth
  • Often cheaper than replacing a piece with character
  • Can stop squeaks, wobble and early fabric failure
  • Honest call if repair is not worth doing

Disadvantages

  • Some modern frames are not practical to rebuild
  • Repair alone will not hide stained or worn covering
  • Hidden damage can appear once cloth is removed
  • Antique joins need slower, specialist methods

This page is a good fit if…

  • Furniture that feels loose or creaks when you sit
  • Pieces with one broken arm worth saving
  • Anyone quoted a recover without a frame check
Quick answers

Questions people actually ask.

Often yes, if the cover can come off and go back cleanly. Some stitched-on covers cannot.
No. Chipboard and some modern frames are not worth the labour. We will say so.
If they can be moved without making the break worse. Photos help us plan that.
