Spring Repair

If you can feel the spring, the covering is not the first job

Springs

Spring units give a sofa its live sit. When a coil breaks, a clip lets go, or the unit drops, no amount of new fabric will feel right. We open the seat, see whether it is coil, sinuous zig-zag or a sprung unit, and repair that system before talking about cloth.

Photos from underneath, or a description of a sudden drop in one place, matter. Springs are the repair that protects everything you later spend on fabric.

Repair first

We look at the frame, springs, foam and covering separately. If a joint is loose, new cloth will not save it. The honest sequence is inspect, repair, then recover — only if the piece is worth it.

Replace only if needed

Some modern frames are chipboard. Some hides are finished. We would rather say a piece is not worth covering than take a recover that fails in months.

What this actually includes

Explained, not just listed.

01

Unit inspection

We identify the spring type and whether a single break or a failed unit is the issue.

02

Replacement

Broken coils, clips or webbing ties replaced so the sit is even again.

03

Noise and drop

Twangs, knocks and one-sided collapse traced to the metal, not the foam.

04

Then covering

Springs first. Fabric second. That order saves you doing the job twice.

How the job runs

From photos to a piece you can sit on.

A clear path from first pictures to workshop finish — so you always know what happens next.

  1. Describe the feel

A hole in one spot, a lean, or a metallic noise when you sit.

  2. Open the seat

Covering back to see the unit — sometimes only after strip-down in the workshop.

  3. Repair the metal

Coils, clips or replacements fitted and tied.

  4. Rebuild comfort

Calico, foam and covering put back on a sound platform.

Honest comparison

Advantages & disadvantages

What this service does well — and what to weigh up before you commit.

Advantages

  • Stops sagging seats at the structural layer
  • Prevents new foam failing early on a soft base
  • Can quiet squeaks from tired coils or clips
  • Essential check before a quality recover

Disadvantages

  • Needs cloth off — not a surface-only job
  • Serpentine vs coil systems need different fixes
  • Severely rusted units may need full replacement
  • Labour rises if rails or edge wire also failed

This page is a good fit if…

  • Older sofas with a sudden collapsed seat
  • Chairs that ping or knock when sat on
  • Pieces about to be recovered that have never had the springs checked
Quick answers

Questions people actually ask.

Rarely to a lasting standard. This is bench work with the covering off.
Many use webbing and foam only. Photos underneath tell us which system you have.
When the frame is good, yes. When the unit and frame are both gone, we will recommend replacing.
